Simple Steps to Improve Your English Now

Unfortunately, we tend to criticize ourself. Sometimes that gets to the point, where we don’t recognize our successes or realize that we are making progress. This, is why I encourage all clients to write down the things they have learned and exercises they have mastered. I recommend that you do the same. Creating a list of your skill development, will boost your motivation and strengthens your confidence. Now, let’s look at four steps to improve your English.

1) DON’T criticize Yourself

Don’t spend time doubting yourself. Speculating about your skills, will only bring you down. So please, focus on what you are doing right. I tell my students never to think of themselves negatively. If someone starts to do so, I instantly tell them to stop it right in that instant. I tell them “No, just no!”… and then I continue to encourage them to improve their English. Always think of room for improvement instead of criticism.

2) Your previous work

After a few months of learning/experience, think back at the knowledge you have acquired. I would like for you to do two things when you review your speaking and writing: 1) Take a look at the things you have done correctly, and 2) identify mistakes you made and correct them using your newly learned knowledge. Of course, you can then focus on a few things to improve the next time you speak English.

3) Put your knowledge to a test

Reinforce the English that you know. Certainly, you don’t have to start out with long sentences. For instance, walk in to a store in your local neighborhood. Instead of speaking your native language you can say something a long the lines of “Where is the…?”. Every time you speak English and the person you are speaking to reacts with understanding, that means you are doing well. So keep it up!

4) Ask questions

Finally, always be curious about learning a skill that you want to improve. Asking questions, analyzing, and coming up with solutions make the best method to learn the language.
